Rock that Signature Scarf

Rock that Signature Scarf

Hello!  Welcome to Gloriously Vintage, dear Reader, it is a great pleasure to be writing more thoughts about wearing a signature scarf.

023

I took the plunge last Sunday and went out in a lovely soft yellow skirt and actually wore 2 scarves as I wanted to rock that signature scarf and show you these two very different scarves with this summery outfit.  It was warm enough to not need a jacket, but not very sunny!  At least I have worn my soft yellow skirt once this summer.

Collecting and wearing scarves, especially silk ones is a great passion for me.   In this post I want to share more thoughts about how a scarf can lift what you are wearing to express your personality and individual style.

Wearing vintage style allows for so much variation and scope to be very creative.

It has been a rather grey and dreary week weather-wise here in the UK- I am still waiting for the warm summer days and evenings!  We are promised some warmth next week, well dear Reader, the rest of July could be glorious!

This bright scarf has yellow and white in the pattern.  I originally bought it to go with this skirt as a first foray into wearing yellow and is part of my S/S scarf collection.  It is made of polyester and is like heavy chiffon.  It is un-named and has a machined hem.  The mix of colours attracted me.

The texture of this scarf makes it cling to the top and stay in place well, once positioned.  It is tied in my signature style, which I will call the Elizabeth Drape as it appears regularly here.

This is a large, whisper fine graphic print silk scarf from Accessorize.  The yellow in the pattern attracted me as it would go well with my soft yellow skirt.

I am delighted to find that my post from April this year is the most read on Gloriously Vintage.  It is Make Wearing a Silk Scarf Your Signature.  What a marvellous feeling to come to the computer and find a comment from one of my Readers!  It is especially marvellous when they feel encouraged to wear scarves more and try out their own collection.

Dear Reader, you see me adding to my collection all the time as scarves are easy to store and give so much to each wearing.

Looking back to my April post I made this comment:

“They can finish an outfit better than other accessories”

The three reasons I think scarves can do this are:

  1. Expression of personality/individuality

  2. Quality and lift to an outfit

  3. Pleasure and confidence

What do you think?  I expect a scarf to meet these three reasons and more!

I have referred to my particular style with a square scarf as the Elizabeth Drape because I have not found that way of tying a scarf in any books or on any websites.

A very important point when choosing the scarf to complete the outfit and to strengthen the signature look is to pick a top or jacket that either tones or is a contrast.

004

You have seen me wearing a scarf on a plain jacket, but in some of the S/S outfits having a top that tones can make a lot of difference.

In the chiffon style scarf there is white and yellow – the two key colours in the outfit.  In the large silk square scarf yellow is one of the colours and the background is white so the soft white top was a safe bet!

Matching the colour of the top is just as important as how the scarf looks with a jacket.  I love S/S styling because often I do not need a jacket so I am only matching a top!  Here I am wearing a soft peach top to compliment the scarf.

CD scarf

The soft peach also worked well with this Christian Dior scarf.  It does look great if you can remove your jacket and the scarf then looks amazing over the top you have chosen.  My trick if it cannot is to take off the jacket and the scarf and possibly tie the scarf to my handbag.  I have a couple of tops that are ruched at the front.  They are lovely tops but they just do not work with a scarf.

The two scarves featured with today’s summer outfit give very different looks.

021

I love the darker scarf, but feel that the large square silk one is dressier.

024

This is because of the quality silk brings to the total look and the size of it makes a more dramatic statement.

Silk can slip.  You can see from the photographs that the knot has moved.

025

I tied and placed the second scarf without a mirror, just by “feel”.  I will adjust the scarf if I know it is one that slips and am prepared to put up with it because of the overall look.

On a jacket a silk scarf can stay in place because of the texture of the fabric – often true of A/W styling or in between season styling.

Do you have any tips for this?

My tip for a flat knot that slips out too loosely is to cross the ends and do one extra over in the first part of the tie.  I used to do this with my children’s shoelaces when they were small to stop the tie slipping undone.  I do this with a fine silk scarf and then go on to finish tying the flat knot as usual.  It stays tied securely and there is no need to worry about losing a scarf that is precious.

New Season Trend for A/W 2016 – Scarf handles for Handbags.

There is a new trend on its way for A/W16 that I read about in the August Edition of Vogue UK –  scarf handles for handbags.  This does not mean the handles wrapped with a scarf, it actually means the grab or shoulder strap is a scarf.

Dear Reader, I love a challenge and am now busy thinking hard about how I can adapt clutch bags with an optional chain handle to take a handle fashioned out of one or two scarves.  I may have mentioned that my jeweller had fitted lobster clasps to the chain handles to enable me to remove them, to take the bags on holiday with the heavy handles in my coat pocket – not in the case adding weight!

I am going to find out if rings can be fitted with lobster clasps so that a scarf may be tied on each side of the bag to the ring.  Watch this space for the results of this quest!  There is plenty of time from now until mid September when I want to wear this trend.  I will keep you up to date with my progress.

I love the whole idea of another way to rock that signature scarf!

Thank you for joining me on Gloriously Vintage – do chat in the comments and make my day .  In the last photograph I am sitting on “our ” bench in the walled garden – it is where we shared our first kiss, so is very special.

A big thank you to Glenn for taking the photographs for this post at Baddesley Clinton, a moated manor house run by the National Trust.

About Gloriously Vintage

My name is Elizabeth. I am so thrilled to be learning how to write a blog about my adventures collecting vintage treasures. This new adventure is to mark my 60th Birthday this February in 2016 and to start this decade with something new. I have been collecting Powder compacts, 1950's costume jewellery, vintage handbags, silk scarves, vintage umbrellas and hats for over five years now. I try to wear and use as much of my collections as possible. This has added great enjoyment to my life! As a child my "best game " was always dressing up. I kept all my dressing up clothes in a large wooden banded trunk in the spare bedroom -the third bedroom. Creating outfits and characters, wearing jewellery always with a handbag and a powder compact I would play on my own for hours. Most of my treasures then came from jumble sales and bric a brac shops browsed with my parents on holiday. Life has a way of coming round full circle. In my fifties I found increasing joy in being able to just be myself and adopt the hairstyle I wanted and the vintage look that suited me. I source all my "top clothes" from Oxfam on line and charity shops Mixing new tops, shoes and sometimes handbags with my vintage accessories has given me a signature style that is unique. I have always tried to be an individual and not follow the crowd. I find most of my collections at vintage fairs, charity shops and going to Antiques for Everyone at the NEC has been a marvellous time for hunting out treasures and learning more about the things that have sparked real passion for me.

  3. Hi Elizabeth,

personally speaking I do not wear scarves so often (I´ve 4 and I tend to wear them in Autumn) but my mother has a “small collection”.

Most of them are hand made by her, she bought the silk, made squares, sewed them, painted them and signed them. They are really nice.
She usually wears them on Sundays to go to the church with my father and always from Autumn to Spring.

Scarves suit you very well indeed and I love your tye signature “Elizabeth Drape”.

Have a great weekend and last week of July,

    Eva (from Luxembourg/Germany)

    • Dear Eva, how lovely to find your comment on this post! Your mother’s scarves sound wonderful. I am full of admiration for her having the skill to make such original, beautiful and very special scarves. It is only since I have been wearing vintage style that I wear scarves more.
Thank you for your very kind thoughts on the “Elizabeth Drape”! Indeed I am working out an outfit for today based on a much loved scarf! Have a great weekend too – July has flown by so quickly! Best wishes, Elizabeth xx

  4. Absolutely beautiful scarves (and outfit), dear Elizabeth. I’m particularly fond of the watercolour-esque one married with your cheerful yellow skirt here, but both absolutely rock. Scarves look amazing on you and I always delight in seeing “family members” from your collection of such (they have many “cousins” over here in my Canadian drawers :)).

    Wishing you a splendid week,
    ♥ Jessica

    • Dear Jessica, thank you for visiting this post and for your comments. My love of scarves is second to my love of jewellery, closely followed by a love of shoes and handbags! It was fun to feature two in this post!
What a great thought – the “family members” having Canadian “cousins”! I am always keen to spot the lovely scarves in your posts. I have just bought a book on ways to fold scarves. It is an American book with some super ideas. Wishing you a great weekend, Elizabeth xx

      • I’m across the pond in the US but have a lot of family that came over from England. It has been hot and humid here. It started to cool off a bit. I know the humidity will return. I did want to compliment you on your pearl cuffs. I think they are pearl sleeve garters to keeps ones sleeves pushed up. I like how you wear them as cuffs.

      • Dear Dee, thank you for your comment. It is great to have hot weather, but the humidity is not aways comfortable. We have just had our hottest day ever yesterday. It is a bit cooler today but still very humid. We are not used to temperatures in the 30’s here in the UK! Over 25 feels hot! Have you visited England, Dee? I am delighted you like the pearl cuffs . They are bracelets and I like to have one on each wrist like Marilyn in “Gentemen Prefer Blonds”who has bracelets on both arms in the opening scene! Best wishes, Elizabeth xx

      • Dear Elizabeth, We are in for a heat wave in a few days. With the humidity, it is supposed to feel like 38C and some areas up to 45C. Yes, very uncomfortable. Oh, I would love to visit England and see where my family came from. Maybe in a few years 🙂 I recently discovered that Marilyn is one of my famous distant cousins too. 🙂 🙂 I have always been a fan of hers as far as I can remember.

Do you wear neck scarves like the sheer chiffon ones that were popular in the 1950s? Of course, one can get a vintage one but they still make new ones. They come is so many colors! I think they would look lovely on anyone. I just got myself a new light pink one to go with my vintage 1950s light pink half-hat. I have some vintage sheer ones from my mother and grandmother. Actually, I saw ”Gentleman Prefer Blonds” recently and was inspired by the pink hat, pink scarf with the navy suit worn by Russel’s character.

        Hope you are staying cool

      • Dear Dee, That is very hot. We had our hottest July day ever this week and it was around 35-40C. I cannot imagine heat over 45C.
I think the costumes are marvellous in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” . I do not have any sheer chiffon scarves now, but wore them in the 60’s and 70’s often with a shirt and jeans. Your 1950’s pink half-hat sounds lovely – I hope your have a lot of fun styling it with your new scarf. I do agree pink and navy are a great contrast and striking combination.
Our weather has dropped back to around 20-25 just now which is so much easier to work in. I hope you are staying cool too. Best wishes, Elizabeth xx
